In 1997 Magellan Technology invented the PJM protocol for passive HF RFID item level identification systems which require a reliable high speed processing of items in fully dynamic situations like boxes containing multiple, even stacked items moving on high speed conveyor belts.

Until today only PJM has the potential to meet these requirements fully. It is the only RFID technology which uses Phase Jitter Modulation (PJM) as transmission method between the reader and the tags achieving the highest data rates of 424 kbit/s compared to all other ASK (Amplitude Modulated) based RFID technologies. The PJM protocol offers 8 high speed independent reply channels with data rates of 106kbit/s on each channel.

The powerful protocol and command structure allow PJM based RFID systems to be at least 10 times faster and more robust than all other RFID systems.

Since 2004 the PJM technology has become the international recognized standard ISO/IEC 18000 Part 3 Mode 2.
